Christmas Party! Millitimed Vaguely to "Sometime Around Christmas"

Anne and Amy have been very very busy over the last week or so, transforming their usually simple white room into the perfect place for a Christmas party.

There are garlands of holly and balsam strung around the room, leading away from the wreath between the windows (and there's a grumpy looking crow, perched in the middle of the wreath, trying to figure out how to get the red ribbon from around his neck). A Christmas tree, candles ablaze, stands in one corner, with presents tucked under its branches.

Welcome, dear friend, to Anne and Amy's Christmas party.

She heaves a mock sigh, "Alas, then. I shall never be a blonde, so I guess it would never work. Besides, the whole two-hundred-plus year gap does make things rather a challenge. We shall just have to dream from afar." Smirk.

And yay! Cake! "I'm glad you like the cake," she beams, "I made it myself."

Brag? Phil? Well...yeah.

"It's very good," says Trina. "I'd ask for your recipe, but I don't cook anything that can't be made in a microwave."

Actually, what Trina makes most of all is a phone call to a place that delivers.

"Trust me when I tell you that you not marrying into my family is a good thing. But, two hundred years, huh? When and where are you from?"

"Why thank you! It did comeout rather nicely." She looks a bit puzzled, "Microwave?" Must be another one of those future concepts she doesn't understand. Like smoothies.

She shrugs, "I'm from Canada. Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia, to be precise. And 1881. I seem to recall Logan saying he was from after the year 2000. It must be a very different world."

"Microwave," confirms Trina. "Box-thing, you put the food in it, zap it for a couple minutes and it cooks. It's great."

Trina looks highly amused. "And Logan is from 2005, so not that far after 2000, unless he's trying to impress you by being all Neo or man of the future or something."

Phil will be forgiven for not having understoof a bit of that.

"You..put food in a box...and it cooks? Wow!" Phil is suitably impressed. "I could use a device like that, and no mistake. That cake is the only thing I can cook without a complete disaster occurring."

She takes another sip of her punch, glad that she's able to enjoy it before Anne finds out and gets upset about it.

"And Logan certainly didn't seem like a...future man to me. I mean, there are obviously differences, but none so great that they couldn't be surmounted by a pleasant conversation."

And mockery. Mockery is trans-generational.

"Yeah, I have no idea how you lived before microwaves."

She also has no idea how to live without air conditioning, automatic transmission, first class air travel, hair driers, pizza delivery, and "the help."

"A pleasant conversation? With my brother? Good luck."

Phil doesn't really know how anyone can survive without "the help" either, but she'll learn eventually.

She raises an eyebrow, "I suppose we manage well enough. I'm a dreadful cook myself, but many people, like Anne, are quite good at it."

"And Logan can be very pleasant. A bit sarcastic and silly, perhaps," she laughs, "but I can hardly complain about that myself."

Trina just quirks an eyebrow.

"Well, if he's being pleasant, he probably wants something."

It's the reason she and Logan are nice to each other, most of the time.

"So you're a friend of Anne's?"

"Perhaps," she admits, "Though sometimes people are just...nice. You never know. Besides, it's just as possible that what he wanted was another pleasant person to talk to, in which case, everything worked out fabulously."

Take it from someone whose motives are usually fairly transparent.

"Anne is my dear, dear friend. I knew from the instant that I met her that we were destined to be friends. You know how that just happens sometimes."

"People maybe, but not people from Neptune," says Trina.

Trina refills her punch cup and looks at it thoughtfully.

"But Canada sounds nice. And Anne seems nice. And so do you."

Phil looks a bit startled. "Well, that can't be true! A whole town without nice people? Why would anyone even live there? I mean, Bolingbroke has its share of people who are less than pleasant to be around, but they're far from the standard. Are all the towns in California like that?"

Phil sips her own punch.

"Canada is nice. And so is Anne. And thank you!" She grins, "Besides, how can anyone expect to make any friends if one isn't nice to people. I'm nice to absolutely everybody, which is perhaps why I have so many friends myself."

Do you disillusion the nice girl from the turn of the century young adult novel?

Not at Christmas.

Probably.

"It's very important to have friends," says Trina. "So, Phil, what do you do in Bolingbroke?"

Re: Refreshments and Chatter

[identity profile] alec-or-alonzo.livejournal.com 2005-12-22 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is," she agrees. Nice girls from young adult novels shouldn't be disillusioned at Christmastime. That's mean!

She laughs, "Oh, I drive my mother crazy by refusing to get married. My father calls me his "social butterfly" and I suppose that's the most apt description of what I 'do' as it were. It's ever so much fun, though I shall be off to college next year. Hopefully I shall have plenty of butterflying to do there as well."

She takes another sip of her punch, "And what is it you do, Trina?"

"I am an actress," says Trina. Phil is forgiven for not knowing this, being as Phil is from 1881. "I went to college to college for a while, but it really wasn't for me. I had my calling and I had to follow my muse."
