Amy can’t sleep. She drifts half-heartedly from one activity to another, reading, sewing, rearranging the odds and ends in her room.
She makes tea, and sits, and watches it cool.
She gets dressed, moves to the courtyard and paces, in circles, around and around, Peter Aurelious keeping an eye on the proceedings.
And finally she steps through the painting, back into the bar. It’s never completely empty, really, but there are times, in the very early hours of the morning, that it’s mostly empty, or comparatively empty, or at least Amy can be reasonably certain of not running into anyone she knows.
And after making sure this is one of those times, Amy walks slowly but deliberately over to the door she hasn’t gone through since the previous October, and puts her hand on the handle, and carefully opens it.
She stands looking through it for almost a minute, then closes her eyes, closes the door, and goes rather quickly back through the painting, back to the courtyard, back to the pacing.
Neither she nor Peter Aurelious will be sleeping tonight.
