Moving Day

It's funny, Amy thinks, as she packs up room 203, how much and how little she's accumulated in the last seven months.

A half dozen dresses, and a few aprons, petticoats and nightgowns, all of which she made herself.

Her workbox.

Her prayer book, her Bible, the book of Sonnets, and a still be-glittered Basic Cookery.

A small porcelian figure and a brown-haired cornhusk doll in a red dress.

A soft blue scarf and a shawl of lavendar silk.

Tea and teacups and a teapot.

A box with assorted odds and ends -- a snowflake ornament, a bird made of paper, a gold pegasus charm on a chain, a bar of soap scented like eucalyptus.

A small bundle of notes and letters.

A quilt in autumn colors.

And a straw sombrera hat she's never had the chance to wear.

It's really only the work of a few minutes to pack it all into a pair of carpet bags. And then she settles the hat on her head, checks to make sure she's wearing all three of her necklaces -- the locket and the glass beads and the dreamcather, gathers up the squirrels and Peter Aurelious, and walks out of the room that's been her home since October.
